The Crimson Room may not have been the first escape game, but it’s one of the first I remember playing. I also remember being frustrated too. The Crimson Room should provide a good challenge, although it’s a bit short and demanding at times.

The escape game- always light on story but never on point and click interactivity. You’d be surprised how much junk you can cram into a single room. So in the Crimson Room we just woke up from a night of drinking- we have no idea where we are and, before checking to see if the door is even unlocked, we know we have to escape. Fair Enough. Click your way around the room, pick up stuff, examine it, and figure out just what it takes to get through that door. I’ll warn you now, the biggest headaches in this game are the hit boxes. By that I mean there are a few small areas that you need to explore where you must click on tiny and out of the way areas of the screen to get to where you need. Most of them are acceptable but the one is just… well... you’ll see.

Graphics have simple shading and design but look nice being completely in 3-d. Transitions from view to view are animated, giving you a better sense of the room you’re inside. The only sound you’ll get is a ‘new item found’ effect, which I think is kind of cool. You’re in a room by yourself, music isn’t going to be playing anyway.

Overall the puzzle elements in the game shouldn’t throw you off much, it’s mostly just the clicking you have to do to find everything. There’s still a nice mix of things to do, from the ‘URL’ puzzle to the projector. Nothing revolutionary, but if you’re new to escape games, this should be a good primer.
