The Time Waster will indeed waste your time, but at least is does a mildly entertaining job of doing it. It’s a small collection of random things to do but the only one really worth checking out is the button game, and even then it’s a little short-lived.

So The Time Waster has four options- the button game, words, do not click, and credits. I started off with the button game, since it was labeled as the ‘main feature.’ The button game is pretty straightforward- read the instructions, press the correct buttons, and advance to the next level. It starts out mind-numbingly easy but soon changes into a test of dexterity and logic. It still never gets overly difficult, but I had fun going through all the levels. Every so often you run into a checkpoint that you can restart from, which is good, because chances are you’ll be re-playing a few of the final levels.

So with the button game out of the way I was curious to see what else The Time Waster had in store for me. Unfortunately, not much. The next stop was ‘words,’ where I was expecting another sort of logic game revolving around choosing different words as the answer. In reality, it’s just a sound board. Click on a word to hear it spoken. Click on a bunch of words to form a funny sentence. Woo. I was never a big fan of sound boards in the first place and this one wasn’t particularly entertaining to me. Aside from ‘words’ there’s also ‘do not click,’ which isn’t even a game.

The graphics are all hand drawn and look ok, but are a little sparse. The background is solid black and the most complicated thing drawn here was the picture of a button. Music features some random track selections including Iron Maiden, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and NOFX. Bonus points for volume control.

In reality this game could have simply been labeled as ‘The Button Game’ instead of the Time Wasters, because that’s about the only entertainment you get from it. However the overall package has a bit of polish to it, with music, menu, volume control, transitions, and various humorous quips thrown in here and there. A nice idea but I would have liked to have seen more things to play with.
