Mad city-saving mouse frenzy |

Detonate by kbaum is the perfect example of how a game can be incredibly simple yet still be something we haven’t all seen before.
Detonate is based around the idea that bombs are being dropped on a city bellow, and you must use the mouse to defend the city. To stop the bombs from reaching the city, you use the mouse to destroy them. In order to destroy a regular bomb, you need to drag it into another bomb causing them to eliminate each other. To add some additional gameplay twist, there are also red bombs. Red bombs need to be individually clicked in order to eliminate them.
Although the gameplay is very simple, it is fun and very smooth. The dragging of bombs was done very well as you don’t have to exactly click on a bomb to drag it, rather only be in the vicinity in order to get a hold of it. The speed the bombs fall at seems well thought out, as the game gets hard but never impossible. The two methods of eliminating bombs make the game challenging and very fast paced.
The graphics are nothing spectacular but they suit the goal of the game fine. The explosions seem like they are a little grainy or toned down but that’s probably to avoid lag during the game. I loved how the background changed colors during the game. It gave it a cool feel.
Although I loved the game overall, it definitely was lacking in some areas. First of all, the music and sound weren’t all there. The music became repetitive, and worst of all, there was no way to turn it off. This is a tip to anyone who makes games or who is going to make a game in the future. Always give the option to mute music and sound. There were some light bomb sounds, but they were basically overshadowed by the music. Another thing that left me feeling a little empty was the fact that there is only one gameplay mode. This concept could have been applied in a number of different ways to offer a variety of modes.
Overall, this concept is something brand new which is why this game is so much fun. The simple gameplay and easy to learn and get the hang of controls make the game very addictive. The high score board allows for some great replay value, and even the local scoring system is fun for competition with friends. With some more modes, better sound and music, and some tightened up graphics this game could have been a gem which is why I’m hoping for a sequel.
