A very unique game with lasting replay value |

Vorticube by tastylamp and bdsflash is a refreshing and unique game idea that was executed fairly well.
The actual idea of the game is very interesting. You go through a tunnel where each section accounts for one level. In each level, you must control your ball in order to collide with cubes while avoiding any contact with mines. Each level is timed, and running out of time will cause the game to end. The most interesting part of the game is its unique 3D-like gameplay perspective. The view is from behind the ball. To control the direction of the ball, you use the arrow keys. Along with the conventional arrow key control, you use the “w” and “s” keys to move the ball closer and further away from you.
I thought the levels in the game were well designed. The colored backgrounds were visualy appealing and pretty cool. Each section seemed to get progressively harder without becoming impossible. The game had some powerups such as “freeze time” and “destroy all mines”. It seemed to get a little repetitive because there wasn’t much difference between each level besides the actual difficulty. The graphics are very good, and suit the game perfectly.
Although the game is fun and unique, not all aspects were executed flawlessly. The first thing I wasn’t all that fond of was the controls. I found them very hard to master. I think there should have been more thought put in to the controls because they probably could have been done better by maybe incorporating the mouse, spacebar, or some other keys. Another problem I found was the perspective. At some points, the perspective seemed off. If cubes were in certain locations on the board, they were hard to get because the perspective was confusing when trying to collide with them. I also had a problem with some aspects of the presentation. The instructions were lacking, and not everything was explained such as powerups. Within the actual game, there was no way to get back to the main menu which was annoying and seemed pretty careless. The sound in the game was good, but the music was very repetitive and I think it could have had music that fit the type of game much better.
Overall, Vorticube is a fun game once you’ve gotten the hang of the controls. With a high score board and two difficulty levels (easy and hard), the game has its fair share of replay value. The idea is great, and with some tightening up of the gameplay this game can be superb, but it’s not quite there yet.
