Another step up for defense games

While it doesn't stray far from the defense game blueprint, Black Sheep Acres manages to find plenty of other ways to stay fresh and interesting. Above all, the game is built on a funny inside joke that's thankfully explained in an extra feature available from the main menu. I'm just glad not to be killing stickmen for the hundredth time.

Black Sheep Acres is an all-around attractive game, with no visual corners cut by artist and animator, BoMToons. You'll get a chuckle out of a number of the sights the game offers, including a smarmy pet dog that scares away rabbits and geese. Another favorite is the deer cannon, which does exactly what it sounds like it does.

Gameplay is fluent, intuitive and fun, for the most part. There are several weapons, enemies, and extras to keep you entertained. However, there are a couple of areas I would have liked to see improved. The nail gun and the rifle, for example, were two weapons whose cost and poor firing rate made them a purchase that never really paid itself back. I also felt that it would be difficult for this game to be played casually, as it takes several rounds at a time for new enemies to appear or for new weapons to become affordable. At points, this can make for repetitive play. Still, if you're willing to devote the time, the game takes you through a very diverse lineup of scenarios.

Anyone with even the slightest inkling towards defense games should give this wacky addition to the genre a play.
