Prehistoric is a slick adventure game where you play as a dinosaur trying to collect eggs and save the last of your species. While not perfect, Prehistoric excels far beyond the norm of flash platformers that include bad controls, uninspired levels, and terrible hit detection.

You move your little dino around with the arrow keys, and attack with ‘a’. It’s kind of a lame attack in my opinion, but you gotta take what you can get. You can also jump on enemies to attack them (I used this way more often) and press down on slopes to grind down them. Prehistoric has several diverse and colorful areas to explore, and I never felt like any of the levels were rehashed or dragged on. In between the regular platforming levels you get some variation like swimming, navigating around in a bubble, or escaping from rising lava. It’s not an overly long experience, but it’s definitely challenging if you want to go for a high score.

Like mentioned before, the graphics are colorful and varied, and are presented in a widescreen kind of format. This game will take you through jungle, water, snow, caverns, and other areas and they all look nice. It’s not like the template from one area was used for another but colored differently. The programming is great as well. A lot of platformers in this genre come with broken physics and hit detection, making for a frustrating gameplay experience. Although I wasn’t a big fan of the ‘slidey’ friction on the dino, I still had no problem controlling the little guy.

If anything I suppose it would have been nicer if the overall game screen was zoomed out some, too many times I felt like I had to proceed with caution because I couldn’t see enough of what was coming up. Part of the nature of a platformer I suppose, but it would have been fun to have some faster moving ‘grind’ areas with more game screen ahead to be able to make quick decisions. Maybe in Prehistoric 2?
