Alright, flash will never be able to compete with a console, but this game comes pretty close. Close to the Gameboy and Sega Genesis at least. Ultimate Flash Sonic is a near-perfect replication of an old-school 2d Sonic game. Dennis has pretty much done the work of an entire game team here. Minus the graphics and sound of course, which are obviously ripped, but when your aim is to recreate a sonic game there’s not much you can do about that.

The game only spans two levels but they’re very well done. Everything you would expect to see in a sonic game is here. I don’t know if the levels are completely original or if Dennis custom made them- either way they flow excellently. Loops, speed boosts, tunnels, jumps, springs, etc. all transition into each other so that if you make the right moves, most of the level works out like a roller coaster. There’s also six playable characters which is very nice. They all play exactly the same as sonic (well, a couple of them can fly) so don’t expect to pick knuckles and try to climb up to an unreachable spot in the level. They have their own unique touches though which is cool, like the little chao that follows cream around in the level.

The graphics and sound are all rips but they’re flawless. No compression, distortion, blurring, rough edges, anything. It’s like someone planted a miniature Gameboy Advance in your screen. The presentation is where this game really stands out- the menus are all fully animated and look very professional and don’t look cluttered. This game also has a lot of replay value for a flash game. There are five characters to unlock, and you can choose any stage to play them in. There’s also a time trial mode to see how fast you can beat any of the stages with any of the characters. You unlock cheats too for interesting effects. Lastly, you can save all your progress with a password feature.

Ultimate Flash Sonic does have a few bugs however. There’s been a few times where my character would stop and appear to get caught on something when getting ready to run up a curved surface. I’ve also fallen through the board before (in a corner) and sometimes when losing your rings you don’t get a full recovery period before dying. But with a game engine this large and complex stuff like this is bound to happen sometimes. Bugs aside there’s no denying it, this really is the ultimate Sonic flash game out there.
