Reverb Part 1

Nice mix of adventure game concepts

Reverb is an adventure game that combines several different play styles to create an entertaining (but somewhat short-lived) experience. You wake up in a dark room with no idea where you are or what happened, and the story unfolds from there.

As you play through Reverb you slowly get a better understanding of what’s going on around you. Don’t expect any award winning storylines though, it takes plenty of cues from survivor horror games and action movies. I can’t really explain much else about it for fear of ruining something. However when the game starts don’t think you’re just limited to walking around and talking to people. There’s a little bit of exploring, a little bit of shooting, and a little bit of puzzle solving. You even get a mini-boss to top it off. Unfortunately you only get a small sampling of each before the game is over. The game saves checkpoints for you, but there’s really no reason you should be dying here unless you just mess up on the mini-boss.

Reverb is a game that could have really benefited from an upgrade in the graphics department. Stick figures and simple graphics are one thing, but almost every room in this game looks identical. It’s mostly just the same empty floor combined with a few extra boxes or walls. Even just adding some extra detail here and there, maybe a machine or two, would have made it a lot more interesting. Sound is on-par though, with ominous music playing in the background and all the appropriate sfx like gunshots and footsteps.

Even though the game might not be that long to be honest it held my attention longer than a lot of high-score minigames, without the monotony of doing the same thing over and over again. It also left me wanting to play part two, so that should say something. Here’s hoping part two only improves on what this game started with.
