Cubitsu doesn’t really bring anything revolutionary to the puzzle genre, but it’s unique enough to warrant some play-time. The idea here is to line up sets of stars in a 3x3 grid (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal). You can click an arrow at either end of the rows/columns to change that row/column to three new random blocks. The key here is that stars can be picked up and moved to empty blocks, so in a way you can try to save the stars onto other blocks while looking for more stars on the current blocks.

You have a set amount of time to match up as many stars as you can, with other types of blocks added into the mix too. There are bonus, time, and clear blocks that you can simply click to add extra points, extra time, or clear the screen. There are ‘banned’ blocks that prevent you from storing stars on them, and there are skull blocks that if you accidentally line up they will hurt your score. Seeing your timer constantly tick down leads to some frantic gameplay, and chances are you’ll end up skipping past stars that you need while trying cram in as many lines as you can.

The music (straight from Kirby) pretty much fits the game perfect, especially when it switches to a higher-tempo track when your time starts to run out. Graphics on the other hand could have used some work, particularly the score/time display area. It looks like that part was just drawn out in a couple minutes. There’s also a bit of overuse on gradients.

Some extra kinds of modes or options could have extended the life of this game but it’s a pretty solid entry as-is. As expected you can play for high scores too, so be prepared to sharpen up your star-spotting skills. Be sure to give Cubitsu a try.
