PacXon takes two already existing game concepts (pac-man and xonix) and combines them to make a surprisingly fun little game. It’s a good mix, as the two game types complement each other well.
The main idea behind PacXon is to keep condensing the game area until you have the ghosts trapped in a small enough space (20% to be exact) You do this by successfully navigating pac-man across an uncovered area without letting the ghosts touch you or the line you make. While moving on a covered area you can start and stop at will, but once you move into uncovered areas you have to keep moving in a direction until you reach the other side. This ensures you plan your moves out a little in advance. As you progress through levels the game will throw faster, more numerous, and more varied ghosts at you.
At first the only ghosts you have to worry about are ones that just move around. Don’t get used to it though because shortly after you’ll be getting others to deal with- ghosts that move inside covered areas, ghosts that skim the edges, and ghosts that eat your covered areas. There are also powerups to be aware of. Some slow the ghosts down and some just give you points. You can earn extra lives as you play but it’s not really that significant because you can always continue from where you left off at. Continuing will reset your score though.
Graphics aren’t anything great but they suit the game in true pac-man fashion. Not that pac-man was pretty in the first place. The levels could have used some variety like changing the background or block colors though. This is yet another game that has music on the title screen but for some reason doesn’t have any during the game. If you go through the effort of putting music in the title screen, and even a music toggle, why not just leave it in the main game?
I found PacXon to be decently engaging, with enough ghost changeups during the levels to keep wanting to play. I ran into a glitch here and there where the ghosts got stuck in each other but that was rare. Overall, PacXon should appeal to any gamer, not just pac-man or xonix fans.
