wpnFire has no plot, no story, no motive, nothing. You’re just thrown into random levels with a large assortment of weaponry. And it works great.
As far as I’m concerned wpnFire has just the right degree of complexity to the controls- enough to do what you need, not so many that you’ll forget what buttons are for what, and if you play FPSs, everything feels in place. Run, jump, duck, fire, aim, kick, and change weapons. Although I have to say the kick feature is pretty pointless. Most of the time you’ll be leaping through the air raining shells on your enemies, not stopping to kick them.
Tekkan created a wonderful engine for this game. Movement is smooth and responsive. Aiming causes the camera to pan towards your target, instead of being fixed in the center. Firing most of the weapons causes a nice motion blur effect on your character. The engine is perfectly coupled with the graphics. Together they create smoke effects, launched shells, shakes, blurs, smoke trails, particles, bullet lines, and more. Sure, the characters are a bit simple, but are all animated smoothly. Sound is up to par too- all weapons sound dead-on, and there’s a nice selection of music to choose from while you play. My only complaint in the sound department is the way in which the footstep sfx are handled. Every time you leave the ground or touch down there is a slight pause when the footstep sounds are started. I’ve ran into this problem myself but there are ways around it.
The game offers training and survival modes, as well as a mix of others like survival, zombie survival, destruction, grenade avoider, and more. With the time spent in creating this engine there is no surprise these modes are present, as it’s a natural extension of what’s already there. Adventure mode is fairly short and kind of hard in some places (The level 1 boss is just annoying) and while it’s fun, at some points I wish there was more strategy involved in completing the levels instead of just ‘grab whatever weapon you can and run with guns blazing.’ Survival minigames never enthralled me much but if they do you, you shouldn’t be disappointed. No one can resist comparing their high scores right? wpnFire is a complete shooting package, so check it out asap.
