Generic Defense Game

Generic Defense Game is exactly what the title implies- a generic defense game. Poking fun at the fact that most defense games adhere to a formula of sorts, GDG is entertaining but also provides a solid gaming engine to play with.
GDG is ‘eight’ games in one, but it’s more like two. Or it could be infinite, depending how you look at it. The two core engines represent the two kinds of defense games- turret, and shooter. You either defend from a stationary position, or use WASD to move your character around the screen. There’s also an optional secondary target to defend. From here it’s simply a matter of dressing up the game with different graphics. In one you must defend a picnic basket from an army of ants, and in another you must defend yourself from an onslaught of ninjas. The funny part is that you can customize it to look however you want. Check out my screenshot above. That’s right, I’m defending my bowling trophy from the Nazi bowlers in pac-land. And of course in-between rounds you have your usual assortment of equipment to buy, from new weapons to health upgrades.
Graphics are pretty nice, especially from a one-man team. You can see some corners cut here and there but when you’re animating eight different sets of enemy/player sprites it’s kind of hard not to. Arenas generally have a nice textured look to them and the enemies are always entertaining to blow away. Plenty of generic rock tunes to go with your defending as well.
What’s commendable about this game is that there’s still enough variety to separate the games. It’s not like the enemies are carbon-copied. As you progress in the ninja level you start to encounter ninjas that appear suddenly with a smoke cloud. Something the ants certainly couldn’t do. And in the robot level, you can blow up the robots at the right times, to cause their explosion to blow up the robot behind them and create a chain effect. Overall my only problem with this game is that each scenario simply goes on forever, so you don’t get much sense of accomplishment aside from high scores. Possibly even a ‘generic ending’ would have fit the bill. Regardless, this game is truly so generic, it’s unique.
