Crazy Mammoths is a racing game of sorts where you must pilot your iced mammoth through as many checkpoints as possible while staying in first place.

In Crazy Mammoths you have one control option, and that is jump. The rest of the race is determined by physics, your opponents, and a little luck. Since your mammoth is encased in a block of ice, naturally you will slide throughout the course’s ups and downs. It’s when you go downhill that you pick up speed, and that’s your chance to move ahead of your opponent. You can jump over them, but if they jump into you with the right timing it will send you farther back and them ahead. Alternatively you can try to fake them out or just stay on the ground and hope they end up jumping, in which case you can slide right under them. The randomness is present in the course itself, but also shows up when the players behind you start jumping too. You might just get knocked incredibly far ahead by accident, or you could get smashed into last. The racing system is rubber-banded, meaning that even when you’re behind you still have a good chance of catching right back up.

The graphics that are here are nice and cartoony, but there’s just not much to the game. You get a few different mammoth models (some of which can be unlocked), and one course with a fairly plain background. Some kind of course variation here would have helped a lot, otherwise it just feels like the same race over and over. No music, which doesn’t help spice up the level(s) either, but it also keeps the filesize down since it’s a small game already. SFX are appropriate.

Mammoths can be fun, but I found myself generally being frustrated more than enjoying the races. The AI on anything above easy seems to an expert jumper. Having so little control over yourself, you can’t help but watch as everyone speeds past you. You can play challenge mode and for high scores as well, but it’s all essentially the same. There is a multiplayer mode too, which would be quite redeeming if you could find four friends to play with. Something tells me this is a love it or leave it game and well, I left a little early. Doesn’t mean you will though.
