Six-finger DDR

Cooliobeat is a new rhythm game that, while still suffering from the classic sync problems, still provides a solid game and raises the bar a bit for flash music games.

In Cooliobeat the music tracks are split up between drum and guitar, with each assigned three keyboard keys. Guitar is s,d,f, and drum is j,k,l. From there it’s like DDR gameplay, with notes coming up under each key to press. There’s hold notes and multi-notes, and as it gets harder you’ll have to keep an eye on both sides of the screen. There’s five songs to choose from (two locked at the start) covering three difficulty levels. More is always better, but sound is always a space issue in flash games. Five songs in 1.8 MB is pretty good though, so throwing in a few more would have been fine I think.

Graphics are average, but there’s not much to see. You get a title screen and then one stage background for all of the songs. There’s some colored lights and effects, but again, pretty standard. The track selection is a nice mix, with some fast and slow. Well, at least some parts of the songs are slow. You can’t turn it off but that should be obvious… it’s a rhythm game!

The sync problems aren’t very bad at all, in fact I think this is possibly the best sync I’ve seen yet. Most of the notes stay on time but there’s definitely sections that fall a little behind/ahead. Maybe not the best sync, but at least the most note variety. Giving us six notes to use opens up the options more, and makes for some fun patterns. The only downside is that there are only two hard songs to play, so the fun is over pretty quick. You can submit your song scores, but it doesn’t track your scores in the game. Sure, you can just check your score on the leaderboard but it’s always better to have a solid in-game score stat to rank yourself on. Aside from that I still had a solid ten minutes of fun with it, so you might too.
