Escape the THK58

Over-ambitious presentation, a little short |

Escape the THK578 is a point and click escape game built around CGI graphics. It features a fully animated CGI intro and ending, as well as multiple exploratory views in the game.
The THK ship alarm has gone off, and you must get to the escape pod asap. Only problem is that power has gone off and the security systems are enabled, so you have to boot them back up again and get the right clearance. THK58 works like pretty much any other point and click game- find items, add them to your inventory, solve a puzzle, proceed. Unforunately there’s really only one puzzle in the game and it’s not exactly hard. The most challenging parts are just figuring out where to look and click to be honest. The main puzzle involves figuring out a three digit code, but if you can figure out two of them you can just randomly try numbers for the third digit and solve it without much problem. After that you’re in the escape pod room, and it’s game over.
The graphics are a bit hard to judge. The CGI itself looks very nice, but some of the areas and models look a little weird or out of place. I have to give it credit for the multiple-views though. Any area you proceed to can be rotated to four different directions, meaning there’s quite a few places to look at and an easy way to miss something important if you’re not careful. Music fits the game nicely- you can’t turn it off but I ended up beating the game before it ever got on my nerves.
THK is a decent point and click but the overall formula feels a little bland. You find exactly six items to fit in your six inventory slots, each one having one specific use. Also, when you use an item it never really tells you that you use it, you just kind of assume so. Only two items ever actually get used though, so it’s not much of a problem. I’d like to see a sequel with either 1) more areas or 2) more puzzles.
