Nevermore is a platforming game that I can guarantee isn’t quite like anything you’ve played before. It’s not very hard, nor very long. In fact the controls aren’t the best either. However, this game excels purely in style.

Nevermore doesn’t have a story, all you know is that you need to collect coins. Move with the arrow keys, jump with spacebar. This is where you’ll first notice the game’s somewhat shoddy controls. You have to hold space bar down for a longer jump, but the jumping and moving is very rigid, looking out of place and making it tough to land in certain spots sometimes. Luckily the game doesn’t require much in the way of platforming skill, so it’s not really a worry. You advance through the game by moving left to right, with some areas requiring you to complete a simple task or find a switch to press. In fact the coin collecting is mostly optional as well, only needed to pay a small toll. You reach the last screen and you get ‘game over, thanks for playing!’ Wait… huh?

Yes, the game is over pretty quick, assuming you don’t get stuck. If you die, you’ll start at the beginning though. What I like about this game is its quirkiness and overall style. The graphics aren’t the best I’ve seen, but present a nice, peaceful environment that doesn’t really seem to borrow from anything else. One minute you’re hopping up rocks, the next your jumping across a skyrail, and the next you’re inside a library. It’s just interesting to see the way the scenes connect, because you have no idea what’s coming up next. The locales are complemented by ambient soundtracks, so it all comes together as a nice little adventure.

Style aside, the game aspects of Nevermore are lacking. The sound is buggy, where if you die in the middle of an area and restart, the old soundtrack continues to play on top of the old one. Also, your coins wont reset so you could collect an infinite amount if you really wanted. Lastly, some of the platforms are a little touchy in regards to jumping on them, and the game isn’t really consistent with what you can and can’t jump on. Part of the ‘challenge’ I suppose. Either way nothing in this game should really hold you up- just think of it as a serene little jaunt. Collect some coins, enjoy the scenery.
