Boomshine

Not as cool as it sounds

To me, the compound word ‘boomshine’ infers that a game of said title will either have: big explosions and action, or fancy special effects. This game though… doesn’t really have either. Yes that’s right, it’s another mouse game based on randomly moving circles. Although overall pretty dull, Boomshine will manage to provide you with a couple minutes of interaction.

In this game you must cause chain reactions by clicking on a circle. That circle will expand and envelop surrounding circles, which will do the same. With each level you gain more circles, but also must cause a higher percentage of them to be caught in the chain reaction. That’s pretty much it. I could have swore I played a game just like this before with nicer graphics, but maybe I’m imagining things. The concept is ok, but the game consists of mostly just random luck. There’s a little bit of skill involved in trying to eye the locations where the most balls will be gathering, but you can only see ahead so far.

Graphics are overly simple, with one solid color background and a bunch of colored balls. No particle effects to be found, which is practically a must these days for a good mouse game. The music loop is decent and relaxing, which goes along nice with watching the multicolored balls bloom into each other. You can turn it off or on but be careful… for some reason if you turn it off you can’t get it back on again.

Boomshine is truly a mediocre game, but that’s not really a bad thing. Think of it as another quick timewaster. You can play through 12 levels and submit your highscore, and move on. The game could have been drastically improved with some catchy graphics, more variety, or additional modes though. Needs polish.
