Artillery Live! is a competitive online battle game where you simply fire tank shells back and forth, trying to destroy your opponents. The gameplay is pretty shallow, but the online aspect is what makes this game addicting and fun.

It’s a proven fact that playing against humans is more fun than playing against computers, and Artillery is a great example. The funny thing is there isn’t much interaction between human players, aside from the chat window that I never see anyone using. For all you know you could be playing a computer, with some random made up username. It’s not though, and it makes landing direct hits just that much sweeter. The controls are pretty basic- adjust your power and angle, and press fire. You can move you tank back and forth between rounds, to throw off your opponent’s aim. Every few rounds the wind direction and strength will randomly change, ensuring that you never get too comfortable with your aiming. Your tank can sustain a few shield hits, and after that it’s game over. You’re disconnected, your kills are tallied, and you can hop back in again.

Graphics are pretty good, except for the main background the game uses. Which is also a complaint of mine. There’s only one stage you ever play on, and it doesn’t really look that good. I mean, come on. If you’re gonna use just one stage, at least make it look really nice. Everything else is fine though, from the tanks themselves to the shells and explosion effects. You’ve got a solemn military theme playing in the background (along with wind sfx) which suit the game nicely, and can be turned off if you want.

The game does get repetitive, but I think it’s best suited as a ‘play a little bit now, come back and play more later’ kind of game. There’s no account to sign up for and no stat tracking, so that means you can hop right into the game. The game does save your overall top score for a session, which you can submit to the online leaderboard after you die. A lot of that is based on luck though, because the people you play against could completely suck. Regardless, Artillery Live! serves its purpose as a quick fix for online play. Jump in, blast a few rounds, and move on.
